Homemade garlic parmesan soft breadsticks that are fluffy, tender, and ready in under an hour. These budget-friendly breadsticks feature a simple dough and a rich garlic butter topping, making them a perfect side dish or appetizer.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 ½ cups warm water
- 2 ¼ teaspoons instant yeast (1 packet)
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 4 to 4 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ teaspoons salt
- 3 tablespoons vegetable oil or melted butter
- ½ cup unsalted butter (for topping)
- 6 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- ½ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
- 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
- ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl or stand mixer, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
- Add salt and oil (or melted butter) to the yeast mixture. Add 3 cups of flour and mix until combined.
- Gradually add remaining flour, ½ cup at a time, until the dough is soft, slightly sticky, and pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
- Knead the dough on medium-low speed for 5-7 minutes (or by hand for 8-10 minutes) until smooth and elastic.
- Place dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 30 minutes until doubled in size.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Punch down the dough and roll it into a 12×18 inch rectangle on a floured surface.
- Cut the rectangle into 12 strips and place them on the baking sheet, 2 inches apart.
- Cover breadsticks loosely and let rise for another 15 minutes.
- Bake for 15-18 minutes until golden brown, rotating the pan halfway through.
- While baking, melt butter in a saucepan over low heat. Add garlic, Italian seasoning, and red pepper flakes; cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant without browning.
- Remove from heat and stir in Parmesan cheese and parsley.
- Immediately brush the hot baked breadsticks generously with the garlic butter mixture.
- Serve warm with marinara sauce or other dips.
Notes
Ensure water is warm but not hot to avoid killing the yeast. Use fresh garlic and freshly grated Parmesan for best flavor and texture. Do not overbake to maintain softness. Brush with garlic butter immediately upon removing from oven for best absorption.
