Description
These bacon-wrapped mini hot dogs are coated in a sticky, sweet, and savory brown sugar glaze. They are the ultimate easy, crowd-pleasing game day appetizer that comes together in under 30 minutes.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 package (20-30 count / 450g) mini hot dogs (smokies)
- 1 package (16 slices) thick-cut bacon
- 1 cup (200g) brown sugar (light or dark)
- 2 tablespoons (30ml) yellow mustard
- 2 tablespoons (30g) ketchup
- 1 teaspoon (5ml) Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon (3g) garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon (1g) black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon (1g) cayenne pepper (optional)
- 2 tablespoons (30ml) water
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Cut bacon strips in half crosswise. Wrap one half-strip around each mini hot dog, tucking the end under to secure. Use toothpicks if necessary to keep the bacon in place.
- Place wrapped smokies on the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between each one.
- Bake for 10 minutes to partially cook the bacon and render fat.
- While smokies bake, combine brown sugar, mustard, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, black pepper, and water in a small saucepan over medium heat.
- Stir constantly until the sugar dissolves and the mixture comes to a gentle boil. Simmer for 2-3 minutes until slightly thickened. Remove from heat.
- Remove baking sheet from oven. Generously brush each smokie with the glaze.
- Return to oven and bake for another 5-7 minutes, watching closely, until the glaze is bubbly and caramelized.
- Let cool for 5 minutes before serving to allow the glaze to set slightly.
Notes
Use thick-cut bacon to prevent burning and ensure a tender wrap. Do not skip the first bake, as it renders the fat and crisps the bacon before the glaze is added. Serve with dill pickle chips to cut the sweetness. Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven at 350°F for 10 minutes.
